Running ShoesYesterday marked the end of the first week of the level up challenge at work. It has been an interesting experience so far. My goal this week was simple - 18,000 steps total. That's an average of 2,572 per day. Since this was the first week, I really tried to not do anything special - I wanted to see where I was naturally. I was surprised to see that I fell short of even that goal! I walked 16,857 steps for an average of 2,408 per day.

The goal is to be up to 10,000 steps per day at the end of the 8 week period. So I'm going to have to take some steps (no pun intended) to get there. I'm going to start small - step one will be going for a walk today (getting back into the Summer routine of walking with Lori). Then I plan to do a bit more walking around campus to/from class - that should bring the numbers up a bit.

We'll see where this gets me at the end of the week and adjust to see just how I can get to the 10K per day.

Level Up Team Challenge at Work

This week we started a fitness challenge at work. It's designed to get all of us into better shape. The goals are modest and are around walking and getting exercise. My personal goals for this week are to walk 18,000 steps (2,571 per day) and to exercise for a total of 60 minutes (9 per day). So far I'm off to a start that is below where I need to be to achieve the weekly goal. I guess that tells me I need to get up and walk more often.

Photos Are Hard

It's surprisingly hard to remember to take photos of my food before I start eating it. Once I've started, I don't want to take a picture of the pate since it looks messy right away it seems (some times I'll show a partially eaten meal, but not often).

I need to do something to help myself remember to take pictures...that may help me slow down and appreciate it more too.

2013-01-01 Beginning

It starts again.

Lori and I were doing pretty well before the holidays on our low-carb diet. I had lost around 15 pounds and we were getting into the groove of eating that way (it's harder than it sounds, by the way). With the holidays and me being on vacation for three weeks, we did like most people and enjoyed the holiday food. I gained 7 pounds.

So, like everyone on new years day, we're on a diet. For us, I think we'll make it work since it was working for us before the holidays. This meal log is part of the renewed effort to keep ourselves on the right track.

I hope to take pictures of almost everything I eat. That way I can easily reflect back and see how my portion control is doing. This will be a hard habit to establish I think, but I'm going to try.

Wish us luck!

2010-06-07 Not a good weekend

Actually, I had a great weekend, but I was not good about keeping up with what I was eating.

Saturday I volunteered at the ADA Tour de Cure as a SAG. On days like that, I ride around in the truck all day and snack on crackers and breakfast bars.

Sunday we were at home and I could have easily logged what I ate, but it just slipped my mind.

Hopefully this week will be better.

Day two.

So far, so good. I managed to remember to log everything I ate yesterday...although most of the time it was a couple of hours after I ate. That will get easier as get more time under my belt with this...it did last time anyway.

No weigh-in today, I figure that will be fine as long as I keep up with it on a regular basis, if not daily.

2010-06-03 Starting Again

Our scales have been out-of-site for a few months now and I had not given this process much thought, but today, I decided to pick it up a notch and start logging everything I eat again as well as keeping up with my daily weigh-ins and exercise (the exercise is a new thing and I hope it will be the thing that results in my weight going back down to something around normal!).

Wish me luck!
